Two Rowan County Sheriff's Office detention officers, Zachary Orion McIntyre, 26, and Dustin Keith Swaim, 36, have been arrested for bringing contraband into the Rowan County Detention Center. An investigation began after reports of suspicious activity and contraband being smuggled into the facility. Detectives found cigarettes, lighters, and dipping tobacco in an inmate's cell and suspected Swaim was the supplier. He admitted to bringing the contraband in during an interview. Both officers were fired and charged with willfully failing to discharge their duties. Swaim was also charged with providing tobacco to an inmate. The inmate involved, William Jack Daniel Upright, was charged with possession of tobacco by an inmate. Sheriff Travis Allen praised the detained officers who continue to serve the county with professionalism and vigilance.
