Rowan County Parents Charged After Infant Suffers Cardiac Arrest from Suspected Fentanyl Exposure

ROWAN COUNTY — Jamie Robertson and James Danielson face felony child abuse charges after their 11-month-old baby went into cardiac arrest, suspected to be caused by fentanyl exposure. The incident occurred on July 20 at their home on Sides Road near Rockwell.

Captain Mark McDaniel of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office reported that emergency responders arrived around 2:58 p.m. to find the child unconscious and not breathing. A North Carolina State Highway Patrol officer was first on the scene, performing CPR until EMS arrived and administered Narcan, an opioid overdose antidote. The infant was then taken to a nearby children’s medical facility for treatment.

Robertson claimed she had used water from her father's vehicle to prepare a bottle for the baby. She said she, Danielson, and the infant fell asleep together, and she awoke to find her child struggling to breathe.

Investigators discovered unsanitary conditions in the camper, including drug paraphernalia, residue, and uncapped syringes. Robertson and Danielson later admitted to injecting fentanyl in bed before falling asleep with the infant.

Both were arrested and held at the Rowan County Detention Center on $100,000 bonds. The Department of Social Services and the sheriff’s office are continuing the investigation. The infant has been released from the hospital and is expected to recover fully.
